This week’s pet of the week is only six and a half months old and has already overcome many obstacles in such a short amount of time. From being born into the life as a stray, to overcoming Feline Leukemia Virus, here’s Isabella’s story.
As you can see, Isabella has always been small for her age but anyone who’s met her will tell you that she sure makes up for it in personality! In October, an animal lover found an orphaned litter of kittens and was kind enough to bring the litter to McPhillips Animal Hospital. Upon examination, it was discovered that one of the kittens (our Isabella) tested positive for feline leukemia virus (feLV).
Approximately eighty percent of cats that are permanently infected with Feline Leukemia Virus die within three years of coming into contact with the virus due to secondary infections and illness. The veterinarians knew that Isabella would need a very special home while waiting for a secondary test to confirm the diagnosis.
That very special home was with our own co-founder/co-director, Amanda. What makes Amanda so special? A few things, but mostly because Amanda’s cat is also living with feLV, so there would be no risk of infecting another cat while Isabella waited to be tested again. We hoped for the best but knew that if the second test was positive, Isabella could at least live out the rest of her life with Amanda.

After two months of living in foster care, Isabella retested for feLV and came back negative! In 70% of cases, kittens that test positive for feLV will fight off the virus and live long and healthy lives, we are so thankful that Isabella has joined the ranks of happy, healthy and feLV free kittens!
As our Pet Of The Week, Isabella will go to her furrever family with a care package full of treats and goodies. If you think you have room in your heart for Isabella, please head over to our Adopt page and get started on an application!

In November of 2012, a SSNIP volunteer on the Sagkeeng First Nations Reserve found a tiny three week old pup sitting next to a burned down house. She was skinny and crying and unfortunately all alone. Puppies that young aren’t typically too far from their mom. The volunteer searched and searched for a mom or other puppies, but sadly found nothing.
training. We think Sabreena would do best in an active home as she is an active girl who loves to play and run.
This is Toni, a 7 month old lab X who is quite the gentleman! He will shake your hand before he eats his dinner and is learning how to ring a bell by the door when he needs to go outside to do his business! Toni is quickly learning obedience from his foster mom and knows to only chew on his own toys.
This week, our pet of the week is Molly! She is a beautiful four to five year old calico cat that has been in foster for a few months now. Molly is a very affectionate girl who loves being pet and will ask you for attention by putting a paw on top of your hand. Molly’s favorite spots at her foster home are either on her foster mom’s bed or tucked away on a chair somewhere in the house. Molly would prefer a quieter environment to call home. If you think you’ve got the PURRfect pad for her, please drop us a line!
Cruiser is a Malamute cross that came to us from the Gillam pound where he was set to be euthanized. Once he was in Winnipeg, he was set up with one of our wonderful fosters who tirelessly worked with him and his shyness. After a failed adoption trial, we felt it would be best to place Cruiser with a male foster, in hopes of him learning to trust men. His current fosters lovingly report that Cruiser is adjusting quite well and is more than ready to find his forever home! He would do best in a home with another high energy dog, as he loves to play! Also, due to his prey drive, we suggest that he be placed in a home without cats.
